Traffic Cameras and Digital Services – Your Questions, Our Answers
Whether for traffic monitoring, traffic information, or support for digital services – various camera systems are used along motorways and expressways.
Below, we answer frequently asked questions about their functions, data processing, and the use of our digital services, such as the ASFINAG app.

On motorways and expressways, there are various types of cameras that differ in their function and usage:
- Simple webcams transmit live images to assess traffic volume and weather conditions, but they do not capture license plates or personal data.
- Cameras for operational use are used, for example, to monitor installations or overhead displays. These also do not capture license plates or personal data.
- Special camera systems such as the automatic vignette control (AVK), which is used to check vignettes.
- Cameras in tunnels are used to monitor technical installations and to detect incidents such as accidents or breakdowns.
ASFINAG stores video data only under specific conditions and in compliance with applicable data protection regulations.
Webcams in open areas only transmit live images without storing them. Recordings from rest areas may be stored for a maximum of 48 hours. Recordings from tunnels may be stored for up to 72 hours. The storage is solely for reconstructing safety-relevant incidents. It is ensured that neither license plates nor individuals are identifiable. Video data is only shared with competent authorities or the police and only in specific cases.
Webcams on motorways and expressways may be temporarily out of service for various reasons, including technical malfunctions, maintenance work, operational use, replacement of outdated cameras, construction sites with interrupted power supply or data protection regulations requiring temporary deactivation.
ASFINAG continuously generates current traffic information and provides it to external providers such as radio stations, mapping services, and vehicle assistance systems. However, the publication and timing of the announcements are at the discretion of the third-party providers.
If you encounter technical difficulties while using the ASFINAG app, we recommend the following steps:
- Restart the app or open and minimize it several times.
