Construction, Operation, and Traffic
ASFINAG is a reliable partner for mobility, traffic safety, infrastructure, as well as the maintenance and operation of Austria's motorway and expressway network.
Our top priority is ensuring the safety and quality of our road network. To achieve this, regular maintenance and renovation work are necessary. We are committed to carrying out these tasks as efficiently and quickly as possible.
Would you like more information about our construction projects? Details about construction sites and traffic management for ongoing projects can be found under Construction Site Info. Additionally, on dedicated information pages for selected construction projects, you can find the contact details of the respective construction site ombudsperson.

Active work is being carried out on every construction site, but workers are not always visible. This is entirely normal and can be easily explained:
- In tunnels, we often build and renovate behind the tunnel walls.
- We frequently work away from the roadway.
- Many tasks are now performed by large machines, requiring fewer personnel.
- Sometimes, materials need time to dry. For example, concrete requires time to cure before it can bear loads after being applied. The same applies to asphalt and marking work.
- Noise-intensive work must be paused at certain times to protect nearby residents.
- Bridges set the pace. Open areas have shorter construction times than bridges, so workers may not always be required. On sections with many bridges, workers are often "invisible" as they work underneath the bridge.
- On sections with high traffic volumes and limited space, much of the work must be done at night, as lane closures are necessary to transport materials to and from the site. In such cases, workers are mostly visible at night, especially in urban areas.
- And if none of the above applies? Then we are probably taking a short break.
If you see few or no workers in a construction section while driving by, it does not mean that work on the site has stopped or is not progressing.
Construction and renovation work ensures that you can travel smoothly in the long term. Well-maintained roads also provide greater safety and comfort during your journey.
Many motorways and expressways were built in stages between 1970 and 2007, with a large portion constructed in the 1980s and 1990s. This means that many sections are aging or will soon require attention. What can be done? Exactly—comprehensive renovations and complete renewals.
Additionally, every motorway and expressway is subject to strict quality and safety standards. Our roads must always comply with the guidelines and regulations for road infrastructure (RVS). Our renovations and maintenance ensure that we consistently meet these stringent standards.
We place great importance on keeping construction times as short as possible.
When driving by, you may not immediately see the full scope of a construction project.
In addition to visible work, such as asphalt paving, we also renovate hidden elements: our drainage system, electromechanical equipment, and more.
If a section contains many bridge structures, this automatically leads to longer construction times, as bridge renovations are more complex and demanding.
At the same time, we must consider other important factors:
- Building materials often require specific conditions for proper installation.
- Some tasks require a dry surface (e.g., markings).
- Concrete needs sufficient time to cure to bear loads.
- Certain tasks can only be completed in a specific sequence.

Changing speed limits are preventive measures to avoid traffic jams and to dissolve vehicle clusters.
Variable speed limits are activated automatically during specific traffic situations to prevent congestion and break up vehicle clusters (groups of vehicles driving closely together). For example, our automatic detection system can identify several vehicles driving closely together as an impending traffic jam and trigger a variable speed limit (e.g., 100–80–100 or 80–60–80).
In the actual traffic jam area, the speed is not further restricted; instead, the message "STAU" (traffic jam) is displayed on electronic signs.
For conducting speed measurements and penalizing speed violations, the executive authority (police) is solely responsible. As road operators, we only perform supportive tasks, such as installing traffic signs or providing warnings.
ASFINAG does not provide third parties with any information about past settings related to speed measurements.
If you have received an anonymous penalty notice due to a speed violation, please contact the issuing authority directly
Whenever work is being carried out in or around the tunnel, the speed in the tunnel must be reduced for safety reasons. This includes work inside the tunnel itself, as well as, for example, system tests of the technical tunnel equipment. Therefore, it is possible that no workers are visible in or near the tunnel during such activities.
On motorways and expressways, there are various types of cameras that differ in their function and usage:
- Simple webcams transmit live images to assess traffic volume and weather conditions, but they do not capture license plates or personal data.
- Cameras for operational use are used, for example, to monitor installations or overhead displays. These also do not capture license plates or personal data.
- Special camera systems such as the automatic vignette control (AVK), which is used to check vignettes.
- Cameras in tunnels are used to monitor technical installations and to detect incidents such as accidents or breakdowns.
ASFINAG stores video data only under specific conditions and in compliance with applicable data protection regulations.
Webcams in open areas only transmit live images without storing them. Recordings from rest areas may be stored for a maximum of 48 hours. Recordings from tunnels may be stored for up to 72 hours. The storage is solely for reconstructing safety-relevant incidents. It is ensured that neither license plates nor individuals are identifiable. Video data is only shared with competent authorities or the police and only in specific cases.
Webcams on motorways and expressways may be temporarily out of service for various reasons, including technical malfunctions, maintenance work, operational use, replacement of outdated cameras, construction sites with interrupted power supply or data protection regulations requiring temporary deactivation.
ASFINAG continuously generates current traffic information and provides it to external providers such as radio stations, mapping services, and vehicle assistance systems. However, the publication and timing of the announcements are at the discretion of the third-party providers.

We adhere to the guidelines of the Austrian Federal Forests for green maintenance and tree care.
As a road operator, we must primarily consider the following points:
- Clear visibility of the roadway must be ensured at all times and everywhere.
- Weak trees are felled because they could fall onto the roadway during strong winds.
- Trees must be regularly pruned ("cut back to the stump") because they cast shadows on the roadway, which can lead to black ice in winter.
- Wildlife fences along the routes should be easily inspected year-round, which would be hindered by dense greenery.
- Leaves and dense vegetation can clog drainage systems and make it difficult to remove litter from embankments.
For safety reasons, we spread salt even when it may not seem absolutely necessary. We rely on precise weather forecasts provided by modern road weather information systems.
We prefer to use brine, a salt-water mixture, as it can be distributed more easily and evenly than coarse road salt. Even before the first snowfall, we apply brine because it forms a thin protective layer on the road, preventing snow and ice from adhering and reducing the risk of black ice.
Another advantage of brine is that it reduces the overall consumption of road salt, as it can be applied more precisely and efficiently.
With our black ice early warning systems, which monitor residual salt levels and temperature, we can deploy our spreading vehicles optimally—ensuring high levels of safety.
Our snowplows operate around the clock during appropriate weather conditions. On average, our routes are cleared every 90 to 120 minutes by our winter service. Whether you encounter a snowplow depends on chance, especially if it is operating on the opposite carriageway.
- We clean the rest areas (including restrooms) several times daily between 6 a.m. and 9 p.m.
- The condition of the facilities also depends on the behavior of travelers.
- We appreciate your cooperation in keeping our restroom facilities clean.
- In the event of technical issues, we ensure repairs are carried out as quickly as possible.
ASFINAG Rest Areas:
At an ASFINAG rest area, you can park your vehicle without any time restrictions in a designated parking space. During the parking period, the vehicle must have a license plate attached, and either a valid Digital Vignette must be registered for the license plate, or a valid adhesive vignette must be affixed to the vehicle.
Service Stations:
Service stations are not operated by ASFINAG but are leased to operating companies. At service stations, long-term parking is generally not permitted, as the parking spaces are reserved for the customers of the service station.
Please note that some service stations have short-term parking zones established by the operators. Therefore, always pay attention to the signage on-site. If you have any questions or uncertainties, please contact the operator or the service station directly.
The company café+co is responsible for the maintenance and refilling of beverage vending machines at ASFINAG rest areas. The company checks and refills the machines every 2–3 days. If our employees notice a defect, we inform café+co.
For complaints, please contact café+co Österreich Automaten-Catering und Betriebsverpflegung Ges.m.b.H. directly at: https://www.cafeplusco.com/ (kundendienst@cafeplusco.at).

Please send us your loss report via the contact form.
Also, check the Lost and Found Service Austria and contact the local lost and found office or the police. Found license plates are usually quickly handed over to the lost and found office or the police.
Note: We will only contact you if the lost item has actually been found with us. If this is not the case, you will not receive any further notification from us.
In the vicinity of motorways and expressways, building regulations apply, derived from the Federal Roads Act (BStG), the Road Traffic Regulations (StVO), and technical guidelines. These regulations include minimum distances of structures from the roadway to ensure traffic safety (construction prohibition zone). The exact distance depends on the type of construction and the use of the property (typically 40 meters). Additionally, no structures may be erected that could impair traffic flow, visibility, or safety.
Tip: For inquiries, feel free to contact us in writing at liegenschaften@asfinag.at.
Erecting advertising boards along motorways and expressways or on motorway bridges requires a paid permit issued by the competent authority. ASFINAG may be involved in the decision-making process. The permit is based on safety regulations, legal requirements, and traffic safety considerations.
