Traffic Cameras and Digital Services – Your Questions, Our Answers
Whether for traffic monitoring, traffic information, or support for digital services – various camera systems are used along motorways and expressways.
Below, we answer frequently asked questions about their functions, data processing, and the use of our digital services, such as the ASFINAG app.
All questions - Traffic information services
Webcams stream live images to help assess traffic volumes and weather conditions. These images are publicly accessible (asfinag.at/webcams). However, the video data is not stored and no number plates or personal data are captured.
Tunnel cameras also provide live images, but they are not publicly accessible. The video data is stored for up to 72 hours. After that, it is automatically deleted.
Of course, we comply with all relevant data protection regulations (asfinag.at/privacy).
ASFINAG stores video data only under specific conditions and in accordance with applicable data protection regulations.
Cameras in open areas (webcams): transmit live images only, without storing them.
Cameras at service areas: store video data for up to 48 hours.
Cameras in tunnels: store video data for up to 72 hours. Storage is solely for reconstructing safety-relevant incidents. It is ensured that neither number plates nor individuals are identifiable.
Webcams on motorways and expressways can be temporarily unavailable for various reasons. These include:
construction works
technical faults
operational use
camera replacement
maintenance work
data protection requirements that require temporary deactivation
We continuously produce up-to-date traffic information and supply it to external providers such as radio stations, map services and vehicle driver‑assistance systems. Whether and when those providers publish the information is decided by each individual provider.
If you encounter technical difficulties while using the ASFINAG app, we recommend the following steps:
- Restart the app or open and minimize it several times.
- Clear the app data and cache.
- Enable cookies if they are disabled.
- Check for updates and update the ASFINAG app if necessary.
If the issue persists, please contact us via the contact form. To process your request quickly, we require the following information:
- Device type and operating system (including version number)
- The version of the ASFINAG app being used
- For issues with push notifications: the notification ID from the app settings
- Optionally: a screenshot of the error message
For this purpose we offer several digital services that enable a reliable and up-to-date assessment of the traffic situation:
Route planner – for individual route planning
Traffic information – information about current traffic conditions
ASFINAG Travel Times – corridor widgets with real-time data
ASFINAG App – available for mobile devices running Android or iOS
These services support safe and efficient mobility — both when preparing a trip and while on the road.
