All questions - Section toll
Toll system
Some motorway and expressway sections in Austria are section toll areas because they involve particularly cost-intensive tunnel and bridge constructions.
With the introduction of the vignette, these sections were exempted from the vignette requirement.
To use the sections, a section toll must be paid – either in advance Digital section toll or by registering for the Digital Section Toll FLEX service or on-site at the toll station.
With the digital section toll, you pay in advance for a specific section toll segment in Austria. When purchasing a section toll product, your vehicle license plate is activated for the selected section toll segment. This allows you to pass through the ASFINAG toll station without stopping.
Purchasing section toll products
Section toll products (single trip or multi-trip card) can be purchased most easily in the ASFINAG-Mautshop, via the ASFINAG app, at ASFINAG vending machines, or from our local partners (ARBÖ, ÖAMTC, etc.).
Validity
A single trip section toll ticket can be used for one year from the date of purchase and is valid for one trip on the selected route. The multi-trip card can be used for one year from the chosen start date for unlimited trips on the selected section toll segment.
For vehicles up to 3.5 t tzGm, a vignette is mandatory on all motorways and expressways in Austria (marked in red) – either as a sticker vignette or as a digital vignette.
On the green-marked sections, you pay section tolls:
- Gleinalm Tunnel and Bosruck Tunnel (A 9 Pyhrn Motorway) with toll stations Gleinalm and Bosruck
- Tauern Tunnel and Katschberg Tunnel (A 10 Tauern Motorway) with toll stations Tauern/Katschberg
- Karawanken Tunnel (A 11 Karawanken Motorway) with toll station Karawanken
- A 13 Brenner Motorway with toll station Brenner
- Arlberg Road Tunnel (S 16 Arlberg Expressway) with toll station Arlberg
The section toll obligation applies to all vehicles up to and including 3.5 t tzGm that drive on a section toll segment.
Examples:
Passenger cars
Motorcycles
Light commercial vehicles
Light motorhomes

At the toll station
You can also purchase the toll road ticket directly at the toll station in a „regular“ lane in the middle, either from the staff in the toll booth or at the vending machine.
Accepted payment methods:

If you accidentally purchased a toll road ticket for the wrong section, you must purchase a new ticket for the correct section.
Basic Rule: Toll road products are license plate-bound and are valid only for the selected toll road section (e.g., Gleinalm Tunnel (A 9), Tauern Tunnel (A 10), or Brenner Motorway (A 13)). A ticket for section A cannot be used for section B.
Important: It is not possible to transfer a ticket to another toll road section.
If you have not yet driven the wrong section
Purchase in ASFINAG Mautshop: If you purchased a single trip ticket as a consumer in the ASFINAG Mautshop, you can cancel the purchase within 14 days.
Other cases: Cancellation is not possible in all other cases (e.g., purchase as a business, purchase at ASFINAG vending machines, from a partner, or at the toll station).Tip: Keep the ticket for a future trip on this section (valid only within 365 days from the purchase date).
If you have already driven the correct section without a ticket
For driving a toll road section without a valid ticket, you must pay a substitute toll. Pay the substitute toll in full and on time to avoid an administrative penalty.
Tip: Use the Digital Toll Road FLEX service
If you use the FLEX service, you don’t need to worry about a wrongly purchased ticket. With FLEX, the toll for the driven – i.e., correct – section is automatically deducted from your payment method after the trip.
More information about the Digital Toll Road FLEX service.
If you are unsure which ticket you need
Recommendation: Use the ASFINAG Mautplaner, in the Mautshop or the ASFINAG app. The required toll products for your selected route will be displayed automatically.

Digital section toll FLEX
Digital Section Toll FLEX is a service that allows you to pay the section toll retroactively – for all six ASFINAG section toll routes.
You can easily activate FLEX in your ASFINAG account.
How does the Digital Section Toll FLEX service work?
- When you pass through an ASFINAG toll station, your license plate is automatically recognized.
- The barrier opens without you having to stop.
- Each passage is charged at the current single-trip rate.
- Payment is automatically processed via your registered payment method.
- You can view all charges at any time under "Services / FLEX Services."
- The invoice is sent to you retroactively via email.
Your price advantage
With the Digital Section Toll FLEX service, you never pay more than the price of a multi-trip card on any section toll route.
Once you reach this amount, you can drive on that section for the rest of the period free of charge. (365 days from the first passage.)
Exception:
On the A 11 Karawanken, there is no multi-trip card – therefore, no maximum price can be calculated.
To activate the Digital Section Toll FLEX service, follow these steps:
1. Log in to your ASFINAG account or create a new account.
2. Select the license plate for which FLEX should be activated:
- add a new license plate or
- select an already saved license plate.
3. Choose a payment method.
4. Activate your Digital Section Toll FLEX.
After activation, your license plate is immediately activated for all six ASFINAG section toll routes.
The calculation period refers to a period of 365 days that begins with the first paid passage on the respective section toll route.
How the calculation period is calculated
- The calculation period begins with the first passage on the respective section toll route, which is billed through the FLEX service.
- From this point, a period of 365 days starts.
- Within these 365 days, you will never pay more than the price of a multi-trip card valid on the day of the first paid FLEX passage for that section.
- Once this amount is reached, all further trips on this section are free until the calculation period ends.
- Afterward, a new calculation period (365 days) automatically starts with the next paid passage.
Example: Toll station Brenner (A 13)
- You pay your first passage on July 1, 2026.
- The multi-trip card for the A 13 costs €75.
- From this day, your calculation period begins.
- All FLEX passages on the A 13 are billed until you reach a total of €75.
- After that, all further trips on the A 13 are free until June 30, 2027.
- With the next paid trip after June 30, 2027, a new calculation period automatically starts.
Important: There is a separate calculation period for each section toll route
- For each section toll route, the calculation period runs separately.
- This means: If you drive on multiple sections (e.g., A 9 and A 10), each section has its own calculation period.
Exception: A 9 – Bosruck & Gleinalm
- The Bosruck Tunnel and Gleinalm Tunnel are considered one joint section toll route.
- Therefore, there is only one joint calculation period here.
Even if FLEX is active, it may happen that your license plate is not automatically recognized.
Typical reasons for this are:
- driving too closely behind another vehicle
- dirty or covered license plates
- strong sunlight / reflections
- confusion of similar characters (e.g., „I“ with „1“ or „O“ with „0“)
What to do if the barrier remains closed?
- Switch to an open, regular departure lane.
- Stop and contact the toll station staff.
- Alternatively, you can use the help button on the machine to directly contact a staff member.
They will assist you immediately and check your FLEX status.
If the payment via the Digital Section Toll FLEX service fails, it is usually because the registered payment method is invalid (blocked/expired) or there are insufficient funds available.
How the process works – and what you need to do:
1. You receive a notification
If the payment was not possible, you will receive an email at the address linked to your account.
Additionally, a notice about the outstanding amount will appear in the "Services/FLEX Services" section.
2. Your license plate will be marked as "invalid"
In the vignette record, all license plates associated with this payment method will be displayed with the status "invalid."
This indicates that the payment method is invalid.
3. You have 14 days to pay in the Mautshop and register a valid payment method
If you pay within 14 days and register a valid payment method with sufficient funds, the service remains active.
How the payment works:
Log in to your ASFINAG account.
Open the "Services/FLEX Services" section.
You will see the outstanding amount there.
Pay the amount and register a valid payment method with sufficient funds.
4. If you do not pay and do not register a valid payment method, the Digital Section Toll FLEX service will be automatically blocked after 14 days.
After 14 days, the Digital Section Toll FLEX service will be automatically blocked.
This means:
The service will be blocked for all license plates in the account.
During the block period, the license plates will no longer be considered registered for the Digital Section Toll FLEX service.
In the vignette record, these license plates will also no longer appear as registered for the Digital Section Toll FLEX service.
The outstanding amount remains and must be paid.
5. Payment is possible within 28 days in the Mautshop.
Note:
If no payment is made within 28 days:
A substitute toll will be issued to the registration owner.
The affected journey will be removed from the calculation period.
6. What should I do in case of a FLEX block?
