Section toll

Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions about the selected category Vignette and section tolls: Section toll

All questions - Section toll

Digitale section toll refers to the automatic processing of your car at the route toll station. When you buy the ticket/card, your number plate is registered and activated. As soon you you enter a toll lane of your choice with the registered vehicle, the car number plate is identified, the barriers open automatically and you can pass through quickly without having to stop.

The big advantage: The video system works at all open toll lanes, and you can choose any lane you like. A digital section toll ticket can be purchased in minutes from our toll shop or from our free ASFINAG app and from other sales outlets (such as ARBÖ and ÖAMTC).

Important information

  • The digital section toll ticket works on all open car toll and credit card lanes.
  • When you purchase the digital section toll ticket online it also stays valid until you first use it, but for no longer than one year.
  • The specially marked video toll lane can only be used by cars without a trailer. The car must be no wider than two metres (wheelbase).
  • GO lanes are reserved for our GO toll customers (lorries and buses of more than 3.5 tons technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM)), and you cannot use them even if you have a digital section toll ticket.

Info

Motorcyclists with a digital section toll ticket must stop at the toll booth and present the ticket or hold the barcode on the ticket up to the scanner. Reason: the cameras for the digital section toll compare the license plate numbers from the front and back. In addition, it is very difficult for the cameras to monitor two-line license plate numbers.

You can buy the digital sextion toll either in the ASFINAG toll shop or using our free app Unterwegs.

You also can buy the digital section toll from venting machine at various rest areas and border crossings and from other sales partners:

Yes. You can buy the digital section toll in the toll shop before you start your journey. When you buy the ticket, your number plate is registered and activated.

As soon as you enter the toll lane of your choice with the registered vehicle, the car number plate is identified, the barriers open and you can pass through quickly without having to stop.

Tip! If you buy your annual pass as a digital section toll ticket or at the toll station, you are protected against loss. Your vehicle number plate is registered in the system for the duration of the validity period.

You can book a digital section toll ticket (single trip or multi-trip card) for your motorcycle.

However, it is unfortunately not possible for motorcycles to use the specially designated digital section toll lane. Firstly, the license plate numbers are checked from the front and back in this lane. Secondly, it is very difficult for the cameras to capture two-line license plate numbers.

That is why motorcyclists must also stop at the toll booth with a digital section toll ticket and present the ticket or hold the barcode on the ticket up to the scanner.

The easiest way to obtain a section toll ticket is via the ASFINAG toll shop. A digital section toll ticket can be purchased in minutes from our toll shop or from our free ASFINAG app and from other sales partners (such as ARBÖ and ÖAMTC).

Directly at the toll station by cash, credit card (VISA, Diners Club, Mastercard and American Express), fuel card (DKV, Esso, Shell, OMV, Routex, UTA) or Maestro card.

There are also toll processing machines at the toll stations, which again accept cash, credit card (VISA, Diners Club, Mastercard and American Express), fuel card (DKV, Esso, Shell, OMV, Routex, UTA) or debit card (Austrian Maestro card and German EC card) The machine accepts coins and notes (up to 20-euro note), and it gives change. There is a button you can press if you would like a receipt.

Tip! Paying using the toll processing machine: Take your receipt! The toll covers your onward journey on the A 13 within 24 hours in the same direction.

In addition to the above toll machines, there are credit card machines on the A 13 Brenner motorway, the A 10 Tauern motorway and the A 9 Pyhrn motorway. These differ from the toll machines in that they do not accept cash. The lanes that take you to the credit card machine are marked in bright orange. At toll stations you are always on the left in the direction of travel.

You also can buy the digital section toll from venting machine at various rest areas and border crossings. The machines only accept credit and debit cards, not cash.

There are GO lanes at all ASFINAG section toll stations, which are exclusively designated for motor vehicles of more than 3.5 tons technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM) (lorries, buses, heavy camper vans). The GO lanes are always on the far right in the direction of travel and are marked as such.

The GO lane may not be used with vehicles weighing less than 3.5t TPMLM (cars, motorbikes, light camper vans); instances of non-compliance will be prosecuted. The GO lanes may not be used by holders of multi-trip cards and digital section toll cards either.

Exception: On the A 13 Brenner Autobahn and the A 9 Pyhrn Autobahn you can also use the GO lane with a valid route toll product.

A digital section toll ticket can be purchased in minutes from our toll shop or from our free ASFINAG app.

You can buy several digital vignettes as well as the digitale section toll at once, if you like.

Basically, you have two options in the shop to buy your digital vignette: with or without registration in the customer portal.

The following types of tickets (please note that all tickets are tied to a specific route and number plate) are available for route toll sections:

Single ticket

The single ticket is valid for one trip for all vehicles up to 3.5 tons technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM). There is no discount for return journeys.

Multi-trip card

The multi-trip card is tied to a specific number plate and route and is valid for one year from the date of issue. No multi-trip card is issued for vehicles with trial run number plates (Probekennzeichen) and transfer number plates (Überstellkennzeichen).

Other types of route toll passes

A 13 resident pass

Residents of the Wipp and Stubai valleys are issued what is called a resident pass on presentation of certain documents. This pass is valid for one year from the date of issue.

You need the following documents:

  • Registration certificate
  • Residence registration form
  • Valid allonge (lower section)

The A 13 resident pass cannot be bought online because the required documents cannot be checked.

14-trip monthly pass on the A 11

The card is valid for 14 trips through the Karawanken Tunnel within 30 calendar days of issue. Unused trips expire after 30 calendar days. This card is tied to a specific number plate.

Digital route toll FLEX

With FLEX, every trip through an Austrian section toll station is billed automatically and retrospectively according to the applicable tariffs.

We offer a special discounted multi-trip card for commuters. It is a ticket that is tied to a specific number plate. The validity of the commuter pass depends on the duration of employment and is limited to one year from the date of issue. For the toll section of the A 9 Bosruck/Gleinalm, the entitlement is checked separately for each section.

You are eligible for an annual pass for commuters if the following applies:

  • You are not self-employed (i.e. you are an employee)
  • The vehicle is registered to you – the applicant
  • The toll route has to be used when you drive from your home to your workplace

This annual pass is issued at your section toll station.

People with disabilities are entitled to a free annual vignette provided that they are in possession of a disability pass with the ‘unreasonableness of using public transport’ endorsement and are thus exempt from the motor-related insurance tax.

If you are entitled to a free annual vignette, you will also automatically receive a free section toll multi-trip card for the section toll segments on the A 9, A 10, A 13 and S 16 (not for the A 11 Karawanken motorway). These will also be valid for one year. You can use them to pass through the toll stations as often as you like.

You can check online at any time at evidenz.asfinag.at whether a free vignette and the section toll multi-trip card are activated for you at ASFINAG.

People doing military service (basic military service, alternative civilian service) can apply for a special discounted commuter pass. It covers – like for salaried workers – the route between home and workplace, and the vehicle has to be registered to the applicant. You are eligible for a multi-trip card for commuters/ people doing military service or civilian service if the following apply:

  • You are not self-employed (i.e. you are an employee)
  • The vehicle is registered to you – the applicant
  • The toll route has to be used when you drive from your home to your workplace
  • The distance between home and workplace is no more than 150 kilometres
  • The pass is valid for the confirmed duration of the military/civilian service only.

This multi-trip card is issued at your section toll station.

Please contact a staff member at the toll station by pressing the help button on the machine.

If your number plate is not recognised automatically (for example because it is very dirty), hold your multi-trip card or the digital section toll ticket / video toll card ready. Your vehicle will be redirected to another open toll lane. Now please hold the ticket with the barcode to the scanner of the toll machine and follow the instructions on the screen. Alternatively, you can give the receipt code to the toll staff member or show the receipt stored on the "On the road" smartphone app to the staff member. If the video toll ticket or the receipt cannot be shown, you will have to pay for the single trip; we thank you for your understanding.

Info

Tip! If you buy your mulit-trip card as a digital section ticket, you are protected against loss. Your vehicle number plate is registered in the system for the duration of the validity period.

All vehicles up to a technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM) of 3.5 tons can purchase a section toll ticket (single trips and multi-trip card). The designated digital section toll lane (on the very left) is only for vehicles without a trailer, with a width of less than 2 m and a height of less than 4.20 m. What counts is the track or body width without the wing mirror.

Exception: At the Bosruck and Gleinalm toll stations on the A 9 Pyhrn Autobahn, the digital section toll lane can also be used by vehicles with trailers, mobile homes and motorcycles.

All toll lanes except for the GO box lane are fitted with cameras. Every lane can therefore be used with the digital section toll ticket.

The interactive map below shows the sections on which section tolls must be paid in Austria.

  • You will need a vignette on the motorways and expressways marked in orange.
  • On the sections marked in green, you must pay the section toll.

The following sections are roads subject to section tolls:

  • A 9 Pyhrn motorway between the Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning junctions (Bosruck tunnel) and between the St. Michael and Übelbach junctions (Gleinalm tunnel).
  • A 10 Tauern motorway between the Flachau and Rennweg junctions (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels).
  • A 11 Karawanken motorway between the St. Jakob im Rosental junction and the state border in the Karawanken tunnel.
  • A 13 Brenner motorway: the entire A 13 is subject to section tolls.
  • S 16 Arlberg expressway between the St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg junctions.

Section toll segments are cost-intensive tunnel and bridge constructions.

With the introduction of the vignette, these section segments were exempted from the vignette obligation, i.e. section toll segments can be used without a vignette, as the toll is paid at the toll stations or in advance.

The digital section toll FLEX is a service for retroactive payment of the digital section toll – for all section toll segments. You can activate this service in your customer account.

As soon as you pass one of the ASFINAG toll stations, your vehicle license plate number is automatically recognised by the system and the barriers at the toll station open. All journeys are invoiced according to the valid tariffs of the toll stations and debited via your defined means of payment. The transaction can be viewed at any time under "Services/FLEX Services". The invoice will be sent afterwards via e-mail.

Moreover, you never pay more than the price of a multi-trip card for each section toll segment. As soon as your number of passages has reached this limit, you can travel the rest of the section free of charge. (365 days from the first passage.)
Exception: This does not apply to the A 11 motorway, as no multi-trip card is available for this section toll segment.

Attention! You can use all of the lanes marked green for the journey through the toll station. The lanes marked as GO lanes (usually on the right of the toll stations) are – except at toll stations on the A 9 and the A 13 – exclusively for HGVs, busses and heavy motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes and are signposted with a driving ban for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes.

In a nutshell:

  • Simple: use all 6 section toll segments without stopping at the toll station
  • Cashless: debit from the stored means of payment retroactively
  • Flexible: activate additional vehicle licence plates at any time
  • Value for money: never pay more for a section than for the multi-trip card.
  • Clear: List of all transits under "My Services".

To activate the digital section toll FLEX service, log in to your customer account:

  • Activate the FLEX service by clicking "Activate now" on the homepage under digital section toll.
  • Log in or create a new ASFINAG account.
  • Here you can either add a new license plate number or select license plate numbers already stored.
  • Select the payment method and activate your section toll FLEX.

It is possible that your license plate number has not been recorded correctly. Here are some possible reasons for this:

  • you were too close to the car in front,
  • your license plates were soiled rendering them illegible,
  • glare caused by sunlight or
  • a lack of clear distinction between, for example, "I" and "1" or "O" and "0".

Yes. However, you will only save yourself the payment process at the toll stations.

Note: At present, the digital section toll FLEX is an advantage for motorcyclists, especially at toll stations on the A 9 motorway, as the new barrier-free system allows you to use the leftmost green lane and pass through the toll station without stopping. The amount for the passage will be debited as usual from your saved means of payment.

The passage with a digital section toll ticket or with the digital section toll FLEX does not work the same for motorcycles on the remaining section toll segments as it does for cars – this is due to the automatic license plate recognition in the toll lane:

  • In the toll lane, which is open to all vehicles, the vehicle license plate number is only ever read from the front. Vehicle license plate numbers of motorcycles cannot be recognised automatically because they are attached to the back of the motorcycle. The barrier remains closed. In this case, please inform the toll staff of your license plate number. When the toll booth is unmanned, press the help button and a member of the service staff will answer. The licence plate number is used to check whether a digital section toll ticket has been purchased or whether the digital section toll FLEX has been activated. If either of these is the case, the barrier will open.
  • In the section toll lane, the license plate numbers are read from the front and back. However, since motorcycle vehicle license plate numbers are on two lines, and in the case of passenger cars with trailers the two license plate numbers differ, automatic recognition is not possible here and the barriers do not open automatically. In this case, you will be directed into one of the toll lanes open to all vehicles. Use one of the other lanes open for motorcycles or passenger cars. In this case, proceed as described above.
