GO toll
The GO toll is a mileage-based toll system in Austria that applies to motor vehicles with a maximum technically permissible laden mass of over 3.5 tonnes. This includes HGVs, busses and heavy motorhomes. To use the GO toll, vehicles over 3.5 tonnes require a GO-Box. The GO-Box is an electronic device that automatically records and bills the tolls. The amount of the toll depends on various factors, including the distance travelled, the number of axles, air and noise pollution, and the vehicle's emissions. The toll can be paid either in advance (pre-paid) or retrospectively (post-paid). From 1 January 2025, there will be special rates for busses and an additional consideration of the CO₂ emission class.
Do you have any further questions or need additional information about the GO toll? We have compiled a summary of the most frequently asked questions about the GO toll for you here.
Make sure that your GO-Box is always correctly installed and in working order to avoid having to pay a substitute toll. Regularly check the battery charge level and that it is correctly positioned on the windscreen.

You must provide us with evidence for the following rate-relevant characteristics:
- CO₂ emission class 5, 4, 3, 2
- EURO emission class EURO VI, EEV, EURO V, EURO IV
- Vehicle type bus
Please note:
- The GO point of sale does not check any evidence! At the GO point of sale, you only need to provide the rate-relevant characteristics of your vehicle (according to the registration certificate, etc.).
- You must provide ASFINAG with the evidence within 30 days of disclosing (declaring) or changing a rate-relevant characteristic at a GO point of sale.
- If you provide the evidence to ASFINAG before declaring a rate-relevant characteristic, the rate-relevant characteristics are already stored when the GO-Box is collected.
- Evidence of the rate-relevant characteristics is only deemed to have been successfully provided once you have received our written confirmation.
And another tip: you can use the CO₂ emission class calculator to determine the CO₂ emission class for your vehicle and then upload the evidence to us.
Please send us a copy in any case:
- Registration certificate of the motor vehicle
If the rate-relevant characteristics are not clearly shown on the registration certificate, please send us additional verification documents. These include, in particular:
- Customer Information File (CIF)
- Certificate of Conformity (CoC)
- CEMT evidence of conformity with the technical and safety requirements for a motor vehicle
- Conformity of Production (CoP)
You can find the reason for the substitute toll in the letter under offence type.
If you have not paid the toll correctly, you will have to pay the substitute toll.
The substitute toll rates (including 20% VAT) for the incorrect payment of the toll are given below:
REASON FOR THE SUBSTITUTE TOLL | AMOUNT OF THE SUBSTITUTE TOLL |
If you fail to provide the correct evidence of the declared CO2 emission class, EURO emission class or the declared vehicle type bus within the deadline | EUR 240,00 |
If the toll has not been paid (e.g. insufficient prepaid credit, missing debits if the GO-Box is incorrectly fitted) | EUR 240,00 |
Partial payment of the toll
|
EUR 120,00 |
The SelfCare portal is your personal access to the GO toll. It allows you to manage the GO toll for your own vehicle or your whole fleet independently online.
- To access the SelfCare portal, you need an on-board unit (GO-Box, Toll Collect OBU) that has been approved for the GO toll system.
- The receipts you receive at the GO point of sale when you pick up a GO-Box show the Personal Account Number (PAN) and the on-board unit number.
- You can use the on-board unit number and PAN to request a user name and password for the SelfCare portal at any time.
Find out what advantages the SelfCare portal offers you here.
You can only change the vehicle licence plate and country of registration at a GO point of sale. To do this, present your registration certificate and the GO-Box.
You do not need to visit a GO point of sale to change the CO₂ emission class, EURO emission class and vehicle type. Whenever you make a change, send us the necessary documents to provide evidence of the rate-relevant characteristics (CO₂ emission class, EURO emission class, vehicle type). Once the evidence has been verified, the rate-relevant characteristics will be stored in the GO toll system for your vehicle.
You will be issued with a new vehicle declaration after each change to the vehicle data. Please check the data on the vehicle declaration immediately and have any incorrect information corrected on site.
You can download the current vehicle declaration at any time in the SelfCare portal or by submitting a query (identification with personal account number (PAN) and on-board unit identification number (OBU ID)).
If you have not paid the GO toll correctly, you will have to pay it retroactively. This is only possible under certain conditions!
To avoid substitute toll requests, please note the following options for retroactive payment and the corresponding payment deadlines:
Retroactive payment at a GO point of sale
Within 5 hours and 100 km
- Toll not paid
e.g. credit balance too low or GO-Box disabled - Toll only partially paid
Incorrect number of axles, incorrect rate-relevant characteristics or vehicle type
Retroactive payment by telephone or in the SelfCare portal
within 96 hours
- Toll only partially paid
Incorrect number of axles, incorrect rate-relevant characteristics or vehicle type
The current GO toll rates can be found here.
The best way to calculate the costs for your planned route is to use the toll calculator or toll calculator light.
The total rate for vehicles with a maximum technically permissible laden mass of more than 3.5 tonnes is made up of
- Infrastructure costs (differentiated according to CO₂ emission classes)
- Rate for charging the costs of traffic-related air pollution and noise pollution (differentiated according to EURO emission classes)
- Rate for charging the costs of traffic-related CO2 emissions
The actual amount of the toll depends on the number of axles and the distance travelled. On the A 13 Brenner motorway section toll segment, a separate night rate also applies between 10:00 p.m. and 5:00 a.m.
