All questions - Winter Service

For safety reasons, we spread salt even when it may not seem absolutely necessary. We rely on precise weather forecasts provided by modern road weather information systems.

We prefer to use brine, a salt-water mixture, as it can be distributed more easily and evenly than coarse road salt. Even before the first snowfall, we apply brine because it forms a thin protective layer on the road, preventing snow and ice from adhering and reducing the risk of black ice.
Another advantage of brine is that it reduces the overall consumption of road salt, as it can be applied more precisely and efficiently.

With our black ice early warning systems, which monitor residual salt levels and temperature, we can deploy our spreading vehicles optimally—ensuring high levels of safety.

Our snowplows operate around the clock during appropriate weather conditions. On average, our routes are cleared every 90 to 120 minutes by our winter service. Whether you encounter a snowplow depends on chance, especially if it is operating on the opposite carriageway.

Snow removal is essential for traffic safety on motorways and expressways. Our snowplows travel at a maximum speed of 50 km/h to ensure thorough cleaning of the roadway while maintaining safety. Please understand if this causes slight delays to your journey.

Important: Be patient and do not overtake our snowplows! Doing so endangers your safety and that of other road users. The drivers of our snowplows are trained professionals who know what they are doing. If safe overtaking is possible, our drivers will allow you to pass.

Environmental protection is a priority for us. However, we must also ensure road safety. Therefore, we strive to minimize salt consumption without compromising safety on the road. For this, we rely on state-of-the-art technologies for winter service. Advanced, computer-controlled spreading systems ensure that the optimal amount of salt or brine is applied precisely and as needed. These systems take into account factors such as weather conditions, road surface characteristics, and residual salt levels.

On average, we use approximately 92,000 tons of salt each winter on Austria’s motorways and expressways. While this number may seem high at first glance, it becomes more reasonable upon closer inspection: over the entire winter period, only about 1.6 kg of salt is used per square meter of roadway.
