Substitute toll is an amount that becomes due if the toll has not been properly paid.

If you pay the substitute toll in full and on time, you avoid an administrative penalty.

How we request payment of substitute toll:

• verbally by the toll monitoring on-site
• in writing via a notice on the vehicle if the toll monitoring did not meet the driver
• by post – notice is sent to the registration owner

These payment deadlines must be adhered to:

• In the case of a verbal request by the toll monitoring, you must pay the substitute toll immediately on-site. In this case, there is no deadline of several days or weeks. You will then receive a payment confirmation from the toll monitoring.
• In the case of a written notice on the vehicle: two weeks.
• In the case of postal delivery: four weeks from the date of issuance of the notice.

If you purchased a sticker vignette

Buying the vignette alone is not enough.
You are only allowed to use the toll road network once the sticker vignette is correctly affixed to the windshield.

A sticker vignette is only valid if it:

• is clearly visible and easily verifiable from the outside,

• is fully affixed to the inside of the windshield without additional aids,

• is not affixed to the tinted strip,

• is undamaged, and all security features are visible,

• is correctly perforated,

• is used within the validity period.

At least one of these conditions was not met – this is why you received the payment request.

Note: Even a vignette affixed later leads to a substitute toll demand. If you affix the vignette only after you have already used the toll road network, the toll for the duration of the journey is considered unpaid. This also applies to short periods, for example, 15 minutes, during which you drove without a correctly affixed vignette.

If you received a payment request despite having a scratch card, the card was either not activated or not activated for the correct license plate.

Owning a scratch card alone is not sufficient. It must also be correctly redeemed for the appropriate license plate before driving. Only then does a valid digital vignette come into effect.

Additionally, 3 days of postal delivery time are considered in case you wish to withdraw from the purchase by letter.

Therefore, the digital vignette is valid at the earliest from the 18th day after purchase.

An expired vignette is considered improper toll payment, even if it had only recently expired (e.g., one day ago).

The offense „vignette damaged“ means that one or more security features of your toll sticker are visibly activated or damaged.
This renders the vignette invalid.

These security features include the letter A or B (depending on the vignette type) and the year. If the vignette is damaged, the text „UNGÜLTIG / INVALID“ and the eagle symbol may also become visible.
These features indicate that the toll sticker is no longer valid, even if it is still visible on the windshield.
