Vignette and section tolls
For vehicles up to 3.5 tons, you need a vignette. It is available for different periods. On some special sections, you must additionally purchase a separate section toll ticket. Is your vehicle heavier than 3.5 t MPW? Then you need a GO-Box instead of a vignette

A substitute toll is an amount charged when the toll has not been properly paid. If you pay the substitute toll in full and on time, you avoid an administrative penalty.
This is how we request payment of substitute toll:
verbally by toll monitoring on-site
in writing via a notice on the vehicle if the toll monitoring did not encounter the driver
by post – notice is sent to the registration owner
Payment deadlines:
For a verbal request by toll monitoring, the substitute toll must be paid immediately on-site. In this case, there is no deadline of several days or weeks. After payment, you will receive a payment confirmation.
For a written request on the vehicle: two weeks.
For postal delivery: four weeks from the issuance date of the notice.
Does the paid substitute toll replace a valid section toll product?
From 1.1.2026, the following applies:
Within 30 calendar days, you may receive a maximum of two substitute toll requests – regardless of whether they concern the vignette or section toll.
Yes. Please pay the substitute toll in full and on time. This will help you avoid an administrative penalty.
On certain road sections, section toll is charged. To use these sections, you must have a valid section toll ticket. A vignette is not valid here.
If you do not purchase a ticket in advance, you must pay the section toll on-site at the respective toll station and may not use unrestricted lanes.
Why do I have to pay the substitute toll?
The substitute toll was issued because you used an unrestricted lane (see photo: Prepaid-Only lane) without a valid section toll ticket at one of the following toll stations:
- A 9 Pyhrn Motorway: Toll station Bosruck or Gleinalm
- A 10 Tauern Motorway: Toll station Tauern-/Katschberg
- A 11 Karawanken Motorway: Toll station Karawanken
- A 13 Brenner Motorway: Toll station Brenner
- S 16 Arlberg Expressway: Toll station Arlberg

Why did I receive a payment request?
Section toll is only considered correctly paid if all conditions are met. These include:
- Correctly entered license plate
- Correctly selected registration country
- Ticket for the correct section
- Correct validity period
At least one of these conditions was not met – hence the payment request was issued.
You can check these details at any time on your order confirmation.
Important: Always check before passing the toll station whether you have a valid section toll product!

If you pay the substitute toll, you are allowed to use the toll road network for a limited time.

After that, you will need a valid toll product again.
Toll system
Austria charges tolls on motorways and expressways. The system varies depending on the vehicle weight:
For cars, motorcycles, and light motorhomes (up to 3.5 t): Vignette
What is the vignette?
The vignette is a time-based toll for almost all motorways and expressways. It is available as a sticker vignette or digital vignette.
What variants are available?
- 1-day vignette (digital only)
- 10-day vignette
- 2-month vignette
- Annual vignette (valid for 14 months: from 1 December to 31 January of the following year)
Where to buy?
At the ASFINAG Mautshop, via the ASFINAG App, at petrol stations, ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, and other partners.
Important:
Without a valid vignette, you risk a replacement toll or a fine of up to €3,000. If the Digital Vignette is purchased via distance selling (e.g., as a private individual in the ASFINAG Mautshop or via the ASFINAG app), it is valid at the earliest from the 18th day after the online purchase. 1-day and 10-day vignettes are excluded — the waiting period does not apply to them.
Section toll for specific routes
- What is the section toll?
For certain tunnels and Alpine crossings (e.g., Brenner, Tauern, Karawanken), an additional section toll is charged.
- Digital section toll:
License plate is registered, barriers open automatically – no need to stop.
Available for purchase at the Mautshop, via the ASFINAG App, or at vending machines.
Valid until use, maximum 1 year.
For trucks, buses, and heavy motorhomes (over 3.5 t): GO toll
- How does the GO toll work?
It is distance-based: charged per kilometer driven. Requirement: GO-Box in the vehicle. - Tariff features:
Number of axles, emission class, CO₂ class (relevant since 2024). - Payment:
Via GO Direkt or other payment providers.
Management and information available in the SelfCare portal.
Control & penalties
- The toll is monitored via control cameras and mobile checks (toll supervision).
- In case of missing or invalid toll: replacement toll or administrative fine.
Practical tips for tourists
- Buy the vignette before entering the toll network.
- Digital products are conveniently available online at https://shop.asfinag.at/.
- Check the validity of your digital products at https://evidenz.asfinag.at/.
- For trucks: enter CO₂ data in time to ensure correct tariffs.
In general, all vehicles up to and including 3.5 t maximum technically permissible laden mass (tzGm) require a vignette on Austria's motorways and expressways.
On routes with section tolls, a vignette is not required.
Special toll rates apply on these routes because they involve particularly costly tunnels or Alpine crossings.
Exemptions from the vignette requirement (since December 15, 2019)
On the following routes, a vignette is not required. These exemptions are defined in the Federal Roads Toll Act.
A 1 West Motorway: Walserberg border - Salzburg Nord junction
A 12 Inntal Motorway: Kufstein border - Kufstein Süd junction
A 14 Rheintal/Walgau Motorway: Hörbranz border – Hohenems junction
A 26 Linzer Motorway (currently under construction)
No. An adhesive vignette may only be applied once and is always tied to the vehicle on whose windshield it was applied.
This means:
An already applied vignette may not be transferred to another vehicle.
If the vignette is removed and reapplied, it immediately loses its validity.
If you change vehicles or have applied the vignette incorrectly, you need to purchase a new vignette (e.g., a digital vignette from the ASFINAG-Mautshop) before driving on a toll road again.
If you have purchased an annual adhesive vignette or a digital vignette, you cannot switch to the other variant until the end of the validity period.
Exception:
In case of windshield damage or total loss, we offer you a straightforward transition to the digital vignette.
What happens to the adhesive vignette if my car is a total loss?
