All questions - Vignette
Toll system
Austria charges tolls on motorways and expressways. The system varies depending on the vehicle weight:
For cars, motorcycles, and light motorhomes (up to 3.5 t): Vignette
What is the vignette?
The vignette is a time-based toll for almost all motorways and expressways. It is available as a sticker vignette or digital vignette.
What variants are available?
- 1-day vignette (digital only)
- 10-day vignette
- 2-month vignette
- Annual vignette (valid for 14 months: from 1 December to 31 January of the following year)
Where to buy?
At the ASFINAG Mautshop, via the ASFINAG App, at petrol stations, ÖAMTC, ARBÖ, and other partners.
Important:
Without a valid vignette, you risk a replacement toll or a fine of up to €3,000. If the Digital Vignette is purchased via distance selling (e.g., as a private individual in the ASFINAG Mautshop or via the ASFINAG app), it is valid at the earliest from the 18th day after the online purchase. 1-day and 10-day vignettes are excluded — the waiting period does not apply to them.
Section toll for specific routes
- What is the section toll?
For certain tunnels and Alpine crossings (e.g., Brenner, Tauern, Karawanken), an additional section toll is charged.
- Digital section toll:
License plate is registered, barriers open automatically – no need to stop.
Available for purchase at the Mautshop, via the ASFINAG App, or at vending machines.
Valid until use, maximum 1 year.
For trucks, buses, and heavy motorhomes (over 3.5 t): GO toll
- How does the GO toll work?
It is distance-based: charged per kilometer driven. Requirement: GO-Box in the vehicle. - Tariff features:
Number of axles, emission class, CO₂ class (relevant since 2024). - Payment:
Via GO Direkt or other payment providers.
Management and information available in the SelfCare portal.
Control & penalties
- The toll is monitored via control cameras and mobile checks (toll supervision).
- In case of missing or invalid toll: replacement toll or administrative fine.
Practical tips for tourists
- Buy the vignette before entering the toll network.
- Digital products are conveniently available online at https://shop.asfinag.at/.
- Check the validity of your digital products at https://evidenz.asfinag.at/.
- For trucks: enter CO₂ data in time to ensure correct tariffs.
The maximum technically permissible laden mass (tzGm) is the maximum weight set by the vehicle manufacturer that a vehicle can safely carry, including cargo and all passengers.
You can find the tzGm in your registration certificate.
As of December 1, 2023, the tzGm determines how tolls are charged for a vehicle:
Up to and including 3.5 t tzGm:
Vignette obligation or section toll
Over 3.5 t tzGm:
GO‑toll obligation
What is the transitional regulation and who can benefit from it?
A vignette is a time-based toll that you need if you are driving a vehicle up to and including 3.5 t maximum technically permissible laden mass (tzGm) on Austria's motorways and expressways.
How tolls are charged depends on the maximum technically permissible laden mass (tzGm) of your vehicle. This value can be found in field F.1 of the registration certificate.
Vignette (for vehicles up to and including 3.5 t tzGm)
A vignette is sufficient if the towing vehicle has no more than 3.5 t tzGm.
For some tunnels and Alpine crossings, an additional section toll is charged.
Examples: Brenner Motorway (A 13), Gleinalm Tunnel (A 9), Karawanken Tunnel (A 11).
Note: The weight of the trailer or sidecar does not matter as long as the towing vehicle has up to and including 3.5 t tzGm.
GO‑toll (for vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm)
For vehicles over 3.5 t tzGm, you need a GO‑Box (or another approved vehicle device).
With it, tolls are charged based on kilometers traveled.
What is the transitional regulation and who can benefit from it?
As of December 1, 2023, the maximum technically permissible laden mass (tzGm) determines how tolls are charged for a vehicle, rather than the previously decisive maximum permissible weight (hzG).
The tzGm is a manufacturer-defined value and can be higher than the previously relevant hzG (especially for vehicles with weight reduction).
As a result, some vehicles would suddenly become subject to GO‑toll, even though they previously used a vignette.
To prevent these vehicles from immediately transitioning to GO‑toll, a transitional regulation is in place until January 31, 2029.
This regulation allows these vehicles to continue using the vignette and section toll up to 3.5 t tzGm – even if their maximum technically permissible laden mass (tzGm) exceeds 3.5 t.
The regulation is valid until January 31, 2029.
Who can benefit from the transitional regulation?
Your vehicle is only covered by the transitional regulation if all three conditions are met:
Initial registration of the vehicle before December 1, 2023.
The maximum permissible weight (hzG) was set to a maximum of 3.5 t before December 1, 2023 (weight reduction).
The vehicle has a hzG of no more than 3.5 t at the time of using a toll road in Austria.
If all three conditions are met:
Your vehicle remains subject to vignette obligation until January 31, 2029,
even if the tzGm exceeds 3.5 t.
If not all three conditions are met:
Your vehicle is not covered by the transitional regulation
and is subject to GO‑toll obligation.
For vehicles up to and including 3.5 t tzGm, a vignette is mandatory on all motorways and expressways in Austria (marked in red) – either as a sticker vignette or as a digital vignette.
On the sections marked in green, section tolls apply:
Gleinalm Tunnel and Bosruck Tunnel (A 9 Pyhrn Motorway) with toll stations Gleinalm and Bosruck
Tauern Tunnel and Katschberg Tunnel (A 10 Tauern Motorway) with toll stations Tauern and Katschberg
Karawanken Tunnel (A 11 Karawanken Motorway) with toll station Karawanken
A13 Brenner Motorway with toll station Brenner
Arlberg Tunnel (S 16 Arlberg Expressway) with toll station Arlberg
In general, all vehicles up to and including 3.5 t maximum technically permissible laden mass (tzGm) require a vignette on Austria's motorways and expressways.
On routes with section tolls, a vignette is not required.
Special toll rates apply on these routes because they involve particularly costly tunnels or Alpine crossings.
Exemptions from the vignette requirement (since December 15, 2019)
On the following routes, a vignette is not required. These exemptions are defined in the Federal Roads Toll Act.
A 1 West Motorway: Walserberg border - Salzburg Nord junction
A 12 Inntal Motorway: Kufstein border - Kufstein Süd junction
A 14 Rheintal/Walgau Motorway: Hörbranz border – Hohenems junction
A 26 Linzer Motorway (currently under construction)
The currently valid tolling regulations are available for download directly on our website.
Please note that the tolling regulations also include several annexes that are equally binding.

Passenger car (Category B): EUR 12.80
Motorcycle (Category A): EUR 5.10
2-month vignette: valid for two months, starting from the perforation date (sticker vignette) or the validity start date (digital vignette)

Motorcycle (Category A): EUR 12.80
Annual vignette: valid for 14 months - from December 1 of the previous year to January 31 of the following year
Example: The annual vignette for 2026 is valid from December 1, 2025, to January 31, 2027, 23:59
Important: A digital annual vignette purchased online as a consumer is valid only from the 18th day after purchase.
NOTE: A vignette that is not affixed is invalid!
Passenger car (Category B): EUR 106.80
Motorcycle (Category A): EUR 42.70
Trikes and Can-Am-Spyder motorcycles are considered single-track vehicles. Therefore, you need a motorcycle vignette in Category A for these vehicles.
Quads are considered – regardless of:
their track width,
the driver's license category,
or the type of registration (e.g., as a motorcycle)
multi-track vehicles.
→ Quads therefore require a car vignette for multi-track vehicles (Category B).
If your vehicle is type-approved without a windshield, you do not need to affix the sticker vignette. In this case, carry the vignette with you and present it during a check – or use a suitable digital vignette from the ASFINAG Mautshop.
ASFINAG conducts random checks on both sticker vignettes and digital vignettes.
For this, we use personnel on the road (toll supervision) and automatic systems (control cameras).
1. ASFINAG toll supervision
Around 100 ASFINAG toll supervision employees regularly conduct checks on motorways and expressways.
They check:
whether the sticker vignette is correctly affixed, or
whether the digital vignette is validly registered.
2. Automatic vignette control
ASFINAG operates up to 40 mobile control cameras along the more than 2,260 km motorway and expressway network.
These cameras continuously change location.
They automatically detect whether a vehicle has a valid vignette.
Data protection: What data is stored?
The systems only store data from vehicles without a valid vignette.
This data is used solely:
–as evidence for unpaid tolls
–as justification for a substitute toll claim.
All other data is not stored and cannot be accessed.
toll sticker
To ensure your adhesive vignette is valid, you must completely remove it from the backing foil, undamaged, clearly visible, and apply it without any aids. A vignette may only be applied once.
Car vignette
How to correctly apply the vignette:
Apply the adhesive vignette to the inside of the windshield so that it is visible from the outside and easy to check.
The best positions are in the upper left corner or next to the rearview mirror.
Make sure the vignette is not applied to the tinted strip of the glass.
The vignette must adhere completely, without foil, adhesive tape, or suction cups.
Motorcycle vignette
How to correctly apply the vignette:
Apply the vignette to a clean, solid, and non-removable part of the motorcycle, e.g., the fork tube or tank.
Not valid: Vignettes applied to side bags, cases, or other removable parts are not valid.
Important notes
Apply once: If the vignette is removed from the windshield or motorcycle and reapplied, it is no longer valid.
Vehicle without windshield: If the vehicle is type-approved without a windshield, you only need to carry the adhesive vignette and present it during a check – or use a digital vignette.
No.
You are not allowed to punch holes in the adhesive vignette yourself or modify it in any way.
Punching holes may only be done by the seller at the time of purchase.
Simply purchasing an adhesive vignette is not enough. The toll is only considered correctly paid if the vignette is properly applied to the windshield. Only then are you allowed to use the toll road network.
If you apply the adhesive vignette during or after your journey, meaning you are already on a toll road or have been, the toll for that period is considered unpaid. This also applies to short periods, such as 15 minutes, during which you drove without a properly applied vignette.
Can I report or correct this afterward?
No. Self-reporting or retroactive notification is not possible.
If you did not apply the vignette or applied it too late, you must wait to see if a substitute toll is issued. If you receive a substitute toll, you must pay it properly.
This is the only way to avoid administrative penalty proceedings.
Note: Always ensure before driving that you have a valid vignette!
If the adhesive vignette is not correctly applied, it is considered invalid – even if it has been purchased.
A vignette is only valid if it:
has been completely removed from the backing foil,
is undamaged,
is clearly visible on the inside of the windshield,
is applied outside the tinted strip,
adheres without additional aids (e.g., foil, adhesive tape, suction cups).
If any of these conditions are not met, the vignette is invalid.
What does this mean for you?
You are not allowed to use the toll road network with an incorrectly applied vignette.
If you drive anyway, a substitute toll may be issued.
If the vignette is removed and reapplied, it also loses its validity.
What can you do now?
An incorrectly applied vignette cannot be corrected or reapplied.
You need to purchase a new vignette (e.g., a digital vignette from the ASFINAG-Mautshop) before driving on a toll road again.
If you have already driven, you must wait to see if a substitute toll is issued. Self-reporting is not possible.
No. An adhesive vignette may only be applied once and is always tied to the vehicle on whose windshield it was applied.
This means:
An already applied vignette may not be transferred to another vehicle.
If the vignette is removed and reapplied, it immediately loses its validity.
If you change vehicles or have applied the vignette incorrectly, you need to purchase a new vignette (e.g., a digital vignette from the ASFINAG-Mautshop) before driving on a toll road again.
If your car is a total loss and you own an Austrian annual adhesive vignette, you are entitled to:
Replacement vignette or
Cost reimbursement for a new vignette
Important Note
ASFINAG grants a replacement vignette or cost reimbursement only if no one else would have to pay for it. This means:

Exception:
In case of windshield damage or total loss, we offer you a straightforward transition to the digital vignette.
What happens to the adhesive vignette if my car is a total loss?
What happens to the adhesive vignette if the windshield needs to be replaced?
You should keep it! The lower section of the vignette is the backing foil including the serial number and serves as the required proof of purchase.
The adhesive vignette for the year 2026 comes in a bright fiery red color. It also marks the end of an era: From 2027, only digital vignettes will be available.
You can distinguish an original vignette from a counterfeit using the following features:
All vignettes are produced by a specialized company. Similar to banknotes, vignettes have a security hologram as the main protection against counterfeiting: When the vignette is tilted, the federal eagle and the motorway symbol shimmer.
Also in the hologram: The year (e.g., "26") indicates the validity period of the vignette from December 1, 2025, to January 31, 2027.
Even when held against strong light, an original vignette is not transparent. This also applies to the backing foil: The text on one side must not be visible on the other side.
The surface of the vignette is made of special material that reflects light. This effect is easily visible with a flashlight, even when the vignette is applied.
On the empty field of the backing foil – where the vignette was stuck before removal – there must be no adhesive residue.
Yes, toll stickers are invalid if they are not attached or not punched. However, there are exceptions. If a vehicle is taken for a test drive or transferred, it is sufficient for a 2-month toll sticker to be merely clearly visible behind the windscreen.
If you have a yearly toll sticker or a 10-day toll sticker, it always has to be attached to the windscreen. For vehicles that are type-approved as not having a windscreen, the toll sticker has to be carried with you. If you park your vehicle in a rest area where the toll sticker is compulsory, the toll sticker has to be placed inside the vehicle such that it can be clearly seen from the outside.
digital vignette
No sticking and no annoying scraping – the Digital Vignette saves time and effort.
With transferable license plates, you can use the Digital Vignette for up to three vehicles, as it is linked to the license plate.
In case of windshield damage, no action is required, as the Digital Vignette is linked to the license plate and does not need to be affixed to the windshield.
Available online 24/7 and from many countries. You can purchase the Digital Vignette in our Mautshop or via our ASFINAG app.
Upon request, we will remind you in time to purchase a new Digital Vignette before your current one expires.
The Digital Vignette is linked to the license plate, can be purchased online, and does not need to be affixed to the windshield. The toll sticker is affixed to the windshield and is vehicle-bound, regardless of the license plate.

vignettes of other countries
In Slovenia, vehicles up to 3.5t are classified into different vehicle categories, which determine the toll categories:
Motorcycles (Class 1):
Single-track motor vehicles – Note: For motorcycles with 3 wheels, the track width determines the category. If the track width exceeds 50 cm, a vignette of Class 2A must be purchased.
Passenger cars up to 3.5t (Class 2A):
Cars and motorhomes up to 3.5t (height above the front axle up to 1.3 m).
Transport vehicles up to 3.5t (Class 2B):
Transport vehicles / large vehicles up to 3.5t (height above the front axle over 1.3 m).

Through cameras installed at motorway control points and in toll control vehicles. The Slovenian toll operator DARS randomly checks license plates to verify whether a vignette has been registered for the respective plate.
All Slovenian E-vignettes can be purchased with immediate validity.
Slovenian E-vignettes can also be purchased in advance - but only up to 30 days before the vignette's start date.
Our calendar function in the ASFINAG-Mautshop helps you comply with this rule by preventing selection beyond these 30 days.
Are you traveling to Czechia, Hungary, Slovakia, Switzerland, Slovenia, or Bulgaria? Then you need a vignette to use the toll roads in these countries.
