Vignette and section tolls

You need a vignette for vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes. It is available as a toll sticker or digital vignette for various periods of time. With a vignette, you can use almost all section toll segments. For certain section toll segments, on the other hand, you need a section toll ticket.

Do you have questions about vignettes or section tolls? Do you have questions about the different types of vignettes, their validity periods or the section toll segments? Would you like to know more about your substitute toll demand?

Our tip

Is your vehicle heavier than 3.5 tonnes? Then you need a GO-Box instead of a vignette. You can find all the relevant information about the GO-Box in the GO toll section.

Frequently asked questions - Vignette and section tolls

Adhesive vignette:

The mere purchase of an adhesive vignette is not sufficient. You may only drive on the toll road network once the vignette has been correctly affixed to the windscreen. This means:

  • it is clearly visible and can be checked from the outside.
  • it sticks to the inside of the windscreen completely and without any aids.
  • it is outside the tinted strip.
  • it is undamaged and the security features are not visible.

Digital vignette:

Please check whether the information on your receipt is correct (vehicle license plate number, state of registration).

In our validity query, you can check at any time whether your digital toll product is valid.

If the Austrian motorway and expressway network is used without a valid vignette, the owner of the registration will receive a substitute toll request (Austria, Switzerland) or an information letter (European Union).

By paying the payment request in full and on time, you will avoid the initiation of administrative penalty proceedings.

Your concern that the message might be a phishing attempt is entirely understandable. However, we can reassure you: the email requesting you to complete your customer data is from ASFINAG, provided it was sent from the address "ASFINAG no-reply@news.asfinag.at" and has the subject "Your data in the ASFINAG account (SEPA direct debit) | Ihre Daten im ASFINAG-Konto (SEPA-Lastschrift)".

Why did we send you this email?

You selected SEPA direct debit as your payment method in your Mautshop account. For the direct debit process, we need to ensure that your account details are always up to date. Therefore, it is necessary to check and, if required, complete the data. You can do this in your Mautshop account under "My Account" and "My Data."

Please note: If the data is not completed, we will no longer be able to process payments via SEPA direct debit. However, you always have the option to add another payment method in your Mautshop account.

Tip: To identify whether an email is a phishing attempt, always check the sender's email address. Addresses in phishing emails often contain errors or differ slightly from the genuine address.

To ensure that we can continue processing your payments via SEPA direct debit, you simply need to update your data in your Mautshop account.

Follow these steps:

Updating data via PC or laptop:

  • Log in to your Mautshop account.
  • Click on "My Account" and "My Data."
  • Under the "Basic Data" tab, enter your details.
  • Finally, click on "Save Changes" at the bottom.

Data modification via the ASFINAG app:

  • Log in to your Mautshop account via the app.
  • Click on the three lines in the top left corner.
  • In the menu, select "My Account" and "My Data."
  • Scroll down slightly to enter your data.
  • Then click on "Save Changes" at the bottom.

For the SEPA mandate, the following data is required:

  • First name
  • Last name
  • Address
  • Postal code
  • City
  • Country

Important note: Without providing this data, we will no longer be able to process future payments via SEPA direct debit. However, you always have the option to add another payment method in your Mautshop account.

Digitale section toll refers to the automatic processing of your car at the route toll station. When you buy the ticket/card, your number plate is registered and activated. As soon you you enter a toll lane of your choice with the registered vehicle, the car number plate is identified, the barriers open automatically and you can pass through quickly without having to stop.

The big advantage: The video system works at all open toll lanes, and you can choose any lane you like. A digital section toll ticket can be purchased in minutes from our toll shop or from our free ASFINAG app and from other sales outlets (such as ARBÖ and ÖAMTC).

Important information

  • The digital section toll ticket works on all open car toll and credit card lanes.
  • When you purchase the digital section toll ticket online it also stays valid until you first use it, but for no longer than one year.
  • The specially marked video toll lane can only be used by cars without a trailer. The car must be no wider than two metres (wheelbase).
  • GO lanes are reserved for our GO toll customers (lorries and buses of more than 3.5 tons technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM)), and you cannot use them even if you have a digital section toll ticket. Exception: On the A 13 Brenner motorway and the A 9 Pyhrn motorway, you can also use the GO lane with a valid section toll product.

Info

Motorcyclists with a digital section toll ticket must stop at the toll booth and present the ticket or hold the barcode on the ticket up to the scanner. Reason: the cameras for the digital section toll compare the license plate numbers from the front and back. In addition, it is very difficult for the cameras to monitor two-line license plate numbers.

Yes. You can buy the digital section toll in the toll shop before you start your journey. When you buy the ticket, your number plate is registered and activated.

As soon as you enter the toll lane of your choice with the registered vehicle, the car number plate is identified, the barriers open and you can pass through quickly without having to stop.

Tip! If you purchase your annual pass as a digital section toll ticket or directly at a toll station, you do not need to worry about losing it. Your license plate will be stored in the system for the entire validity period and automatically recognized.

Info

Motorcyclists with a digital section toll ticket must stop at the toll station and present their ticket or hold the barcode to the scanner.

The reason: The camera systems for license plate recognition check both the front and rear of the vehicle. Since motorcycles often have two-line license plates that are difficult to read, automatic recognition is not always reliably possible.

The easiest way to obtain a section toll ticket is via the ASFINAG toll shop. A digital section toll ticket can be purchased in minutes from our toll shop or from our free ASFINAG app and from other sales partners (such as ARBÖ and ÖAMTC).

Directly at the toll station by cash, credit card (VISA, Diners Club, Mastercard and American Express), fuel card (DKV, Esso, Shell, OMV, Routex, UTA) or Maestro card.

There are also toll processing machines at the toll stations, which again accept cash, credit card (VISA, Diners Club, Mastercard and American Express), fuel card (DKV, Esso, Shell, OMV, Routex, UTA) or debit card (Austrian Maestro card and German EC card) The machine accepts coins and notes (up to 50 euros), and it gives change. There is a button you can press if you would like a receipt.

In addition to the above toll machines, there are credit card machines on the A 13 Brenner motorway, the A 10 Tauern motorway and the A 9 Pyhrn motorway. These differ from the toll machines in that they do not accept cash. The lanes that take you to the credit card machine are marked in bright orange. At toll stations you are always on the left in the direction of travel.

You also can buy the digital section toll from venting machine at various rest areas and border crossings. The machines only accept credit and debit cards, not cash.

The following types of tickets (please note that all tickets are tied to a specific route and number plate) are available for route toll sections:

Single ticket

The single ticket is valid for one trip for all vehicles up to 3.5 tons technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM). There is no discount for return journeys.

Multi-trip card

The multi-trip card is tied to a specific number plate and route and is valid for one year from the date of issue.

Other types of route toll passes

A 13 resident pass

Residents of the Wipp and Stubai valleys are issued what is called a resident pass on presentation of certain documents. This pass is valid for one year from the date of issue.

You need the following documents:

  • Registration certificate
  • Residence registration form

The A 13 resident pass cannot be bought online because the required documents cannot be checked.

14-trip monthly pass on the A 11

The card is valid for 14 trips through the Karawanken Tunnel within 30 calendar days of issue. Unused trips expire after 30 calendar days. This card is tied to a specific number plate.

Digital route toll FLEX

With FLEX, every trip through an Austrian section toll station is billed automatically and retrospectively according to the applicable tariffs.

On the following map, the sections where you are required to pay tolls in Austria are marked.

  • On the red-marked motorways and expressways, you need a vignette.
  • On the green-marked sections, a section toll must be paid.

The following sections are roads subject to section tolls:

  • A 9 Pyhrn motorway: between the Spital/Pyhrn and Ardning junctions (Bosruck tunnel) and between the St. Michael and Übelbach junctions (Gleinalm tunnel).
  • A 10 Tauern motorway: between the Flachau and Rennweg junctions (Tauern and Katschberg tunnels).
  • A 11 Karawanken motorway: between the St. Jakob im Rosental junction and the state border in the Karawanken tunnel.
  • A 13 Brenner motorway: the entire A 13 is subject to section tolls.
  • S 16 Arlberg expressway: between the St. Anton am Arlberg and Langen am Arlberg junctions.

There are 10-day, 2-month and annual vignettes for both types of vignette (toll sticker and digital vignette).

Annual vignette: is valid for 14 months, from 1 December of the previous year until 31 January of the following year.

2-month-Vignette: is valid for a period of two months. For example: valid from January 10th, validity expires March 10th, midnight.

10-days-Vignette: is valid for ten days. For example: valid from January 10th, validity expires January 19 th, midnight.

Only available as a digital vignette:

1-day vignette: Valid for one calendar day. Example: January 10th from midnight to midnight.

ATTENTION:

  • A vignette that is not affixed or punched (10-day or 2-month) is invalid and can result in penalties of between €300 and €3,000 if no replacement toll is paid.
  • If the digital vignette is purchased in the ASFINAG toll shop or via the ASFINAG app, it is only valid from the 18th day after the online purchase (see "Questions about the digital vignette"). This deadline does not apply if you purchase a 1-day or 10-day vignette!

There is also no difference in the prices.

All vehicles up to and including 3.5t technically permissible maximum laden mass (TPMLM) have to pay toll on motorways and expressways marked in orange (see grafic). No toll sticker is required for the particularly cost-intensive sections, the section toll, where special toll rates apply.

Exceptions to the compulsory Vignette usage

The exceptions shall enter into force in five sections as of 15 December 2019. The legal basis for this is the Federal Roads Toll Act (Bundesstraßenmautgesetz).

The exceptions apply to the following stretches of road:

  • the toll road A 1 Westautobahn between the national border at Walserberg and the Salzburg Nord junction,
  • the toll road A 12 Inntalautobahn between the national border at Kufstein and the Kufstein-Süd junction,
  • the toll road A 14 Rheintal/Walgau Autobahn between the national border at Hörbranz and the Hohenems junction and
  • the toll road A 26 Linzer Autobahn (currently still under construction)

It is not possible to change during the validity period of the vignette. Therefore, if you have purchased an annual adhesive vignette it is not possible to change to a digital vignette during the year of validity (1 December 2023 to 31. January 2025). The reverse is also not possible. For the following vignette year, however, you may decide which form of vignette you would prefer.

Exception: If a windscreen on which an adhesive toll sticker is fixed is broken, we support free, uncomplicated and rapid change to a digital toll sticker.

No, you can't do that. The toll sticker is issued for a specific vehicle and cannot be transferred to another vehicle.
