Operation and Maintenance
We place great importance on maintaining Austria's motorway and expressway network and continuously invest in its upkeep. Regular maintenance work such as signage and road marking tasks, route cleaning, as well as greenery trimming and winter services, ensures that the ASFINAG network remains safe and in good condition.
Our goal is to provide a durable and reliable infrastructure that meets traffic demands and supports people's mobility.

We adhere to the guidelines of the Austrian Federal Forests for green maintenance and tree care.
As a road operator, we must primarily consider the following points:
- Clear visibility of the roadway must be ensured at all times and everywhere.
- Weak trees are felled because they could fall onto the roadway during strong winds.
- Trees must be regularly pruned ("cut back to the stump") because they cast shadows on the roadway, which can lead to black ice in winter.
- Wildlife fences along the routes should be easily inspected year-round, which would be hindered by dense greenery.
- Leaves and dense vegetation can clog drainage systems and make it difficult to remove litter from embankments.
For safety reasons, we spread salt even when it may not seem absolutely necessary. We rely on precise weather forecasts provided by modern road weather information systems.
We prefer to use brine, a salt-water mixture, as it can be distributed more easily and evenly than coarse road salt. Even before the first snowfall, we apply brine because it forms a thin protective layer on the road, preventing snow and ice from adhering and reducing the risk of black ice.
Another advantage of brine is that it reduces the overall consumption of road salt, as it can be applied more precisely and efficiently.
With our black ice early warning systems, which monitor residual salt levels and temperature, we can deploy our spreading vehicles optimally—ensuring high levels of safety.
Our snowplows operate around the clock during appropriate weather conditions. On average, our routes are cleared every 90 to 120 minutes by our winter service. Whether you encounter a snowplow depends on chance, especially if it is operating on the opposite carriageway.
